The Comfort of an Urn.

Many times I am asked why should I (They) bother with an Urn for the Ashes of their loved one?
"We are going to scatterer them anyway, so what the point?

Answer to this question is, generally. "When do you plan to scatter the remains and who will be there?"

More times that not they have picked a time and place in the future when all the family will be together and the ceremony can take place.

Unfortunately, as with the best laid plans of mice and men, these circumstances rarely go as anticipated.

Often a relative or good friend cannot attend or the weather is inclement, the chosen place have been invaded by a bus load of day trippers or any number of reasons.
The result is that the expected scattering has to be postponed.

There in lies the reason for a respectful and visually pleasing Urn as the penultimate resting place prior to scattering.

There have been instances where the main organiser of the Scattering Ceremony themselves have unfortunately passed away leaving the duty to be performed by another. The handing on of an Urn in many cases is preferable to the passing on of a plastic container.

Family Involvement helps..

Recently I was approached to build an Urn for the Father of a young family.

As you can imagine there was a great sense of loss and sadness. Yet having the children involved as a part of the design and building process gave all a wonderful feeling of contributing and in some way a closeness and reconnection with their father.

The end result was very pleasing and cathartic, but more importantly in my view, in the years to come they will feel a closer bond with Dad's final resting placing, knowing they were instrumental in it's creation and remembering the reasons why certain things were done.

Being able to put some of their individuality and love into the building gave them a very strong sense of purpose in the here and now while remembering the good times they had had with Dad.

This is a service we a Fine Boxes encourage and hope to foster more in the coming months.

Consider where to Invest.. Casket or Urn

We all know that the death of a loved one is a very emotional event and as such when we act on emotion many of our decisions are not as rational as they may be in other circumstances. An analogue is the time spent organizing a wedding as to the time spent working on how to survive the marriage.

The same can be said of organizing a funeral. Each of us has to follow our heart and the directions (if any) of the deceased but when it comes to the investment in a casket one has to ask how long will the casket be seen or occupied?

As opposed to how long will the Urn (in the case of cremation) be on display and be occupied by remains?

If the answer to the above is that the Urn will be on display for a lot longer than the Casket doen't it make sense to invest the extra time and money into the purchase of an Urn which will act as a perpetual monument. Rather than putting it into a item that will be on view only for a short time.

An Urn can be made to reflect the personality of the person who has died and also allows you and others to input their own ideas into making it an even more personal memento.

Companion Urns

These are a new addition to our range.
Several times we have been approached to have matching Urns for those that have shared their lives together.

Whether; Siblings, Partners or Husband and Wife or in some cases close Animals and their Owners.
The possibilities are not just limited to other loved ones.
Often a request comes for the departed to be close to a favorite animal or a cherished possession.

The drawback of this arrangement is that even though we can match the design of the Urn it is only in very rare cases where we can match the wood grain or colour of the timber used.

So the answer was to create one Urn that could suitably accommodate remains of all concerned.
Even if not all have yet come to the end of life. That is a surviving partner who wishes to be interned with someone who have gone before.

The Companion Urns are constructed so that there are two or more compartments, ready made inside the outer form, so when the time comes it can be easily accessed from the outside without the need to disturb the remains already interned.

This means that there is peace of mind that everything will match with the minimum of emotional upset when the time comes.

These Urns can be constructed in any shape or form but the main line we carry have been built to contain the regular containers which generally are used by most crematoriums.

Children's Urns

This has been a tough one for me. I enjoy the making and designing of Urns for people that have had a full and long life. But when it came to designing and building little Urns for Little Ones that have not had all the experience that we are meant to have it was a whole new feeling.

Looking at what was available saddened me and drove my reluctance to the back of my mind. What I have set out to achieve in a wonderful range of one off beautiful Urns that will reflect the Love, Sadness and Warmth that the Child or Baby brought into the world with their presence and light.

These creations are made as a mark of respect and a token to their short stay and honour their briefest of all visits.

I will post pictures as these come into form and am open to any suggestions one might have.

I am constantly amazed at peoples short sightedness, lack of knowledge or understanding when it come to purchasing items with a view to keeping them for a long period of time.

3. It demonstrates we have an eye for detail even with the parts that are not seen.

Early on in our business we were interested in wholesaling to various Funeral Directors and were told by some that our products were to expensive for them top resell.
Looking at the imported models they had in stock I was appalled that they were selling them for more that what we felt was a realistic and retail price for our locally handmade goods.

Then I discovered the mark-up that was imposed on many items they sell. To me that was and still is bordering on unethical practices by taking advantage of people who are understandably emotionally vulnerable at this stage of their life. Dealing with the loss of a loved one and wishing to show their love toward that person while working through the grief process at the same time.

What price an Urn?

Following some time spend with those at the end of life and the relatives and friends left behind I feel that I am in a position to make some rather strong comments on the workings of the Death Industry.

I realise that it's something many of us do not wish to know about but the fact remains that we will all experience it from both sides. I can't comment on the experience of an actual crossing over but I can on being left behind.

It would appear in my personal observations that there are some industry leaders that use your vulnerable emotional state as an invitation to charge exorbitant prices for Goods and Service that frankly are not worth anywhere what is being charged in relation to the actual cost of manufacture or delivery.

A case in point are the prices charged for many cremation urns which leave a lot to be desired. I have been in the position to see many such Urns after the purchasers have been disheartened at the performance of the Final Resting Place for their loved ones.

Some observations are the interiors has not been finished nor sanded the corners are held together with staples and there are no supports for structural strength.The Tops also are held in place with Glue and wood putty.

The result of this style of construction is that the vessel firstly is weak and does not allow for the movement of the timber so over time the top WILL Warp and runs the very real chance of SPLITTING. This does not go well for those wishing the have the Urn for a long time. Not only is this inconvenient but also can provide much anxiety for the loved ones that have to go through the process of another interment as they have to transfer their loved ones remains into another resting place.
